Anyone Can Use the Tools. It’s About the Outcome.
I recently had a conversation with a colleague who admitted he was feeling a bit uneasy about the rise of artificial intelligence. He mentioned seeing an impact on his business because, in his words: "Anyone can do what I do now, and the need for people like me is diminishing."
I told him I completely disagreed. And here’s why.
Think about surgical procedures like a tonsillectomy, an appendectomy, or plastic surgery. They are taught step-by-step in medical school, and any number of surgeons across different specialties can perform them. On paper, the procedure itself is routine.
What makes it not routine is the person holding the scalpel.
If you or a family member undergo that operation, you don't just want anyone who read the textbook. You want the practitioner with hundreds of successful procedures under their belt—someone who knows the subtle nuances, anticipates complications, and delivers the best possible outcome every single time.
The exact same principle applies to software development, website creation, marketing strategy, copywriting, or any core function of your business.
Your 13-year-old at home might be an absolute whiz with AI for their homework or creative hobbies. But when it comes to your company's digital infrastructure, technical marketing, or building AI-generated applications, you want an experienced professional behind the wheel.
Why? Because true expertise isn't just about typing a prompt into a text box and accepting whatever answer pops out.
It’s about knowing:
- The right questions to ask: Framing problems with industry context, strategic depth, and technical precision.
- How to interpret the output: Dissecting complex, highly technical AI responses to separate actionable genius from superficial fluff.
- Where to push back: Stress-testing the logic, challenging assumptions, and refining the output until it meets real-world standards. (After all, how do you know the AI is wrong if you aren’t sure yourself?)
AI is an extraordinary tool, but a tool is only as capable as the hands holding it. Anyone can generate a prompt, but the result is where it gets complicated. Heck, I could attempt an appendectomy—but the outcome is likely not going to be great.
An experienced professional knows how to direct, challenge, and shape AI output into a real result that meets your business needs.
When you need specialized help, cost is always a factor—but the outcome outweighs the cost every single time.
