If You Don’t Put It On the Menu, How Will You Sell It?
I ask just about every new client the same question when we’re talking about their business, especially when they want their website to be minimal with just the essentials.
I ask them, "If you owned a restaurant that made the world’s greatest cheesecake, but you didn’t list it on the menu—how much cheesecake do you think you’d sell?"
The answer is always the same: None.
It’s an obvious scenario, yet I see brilliant business owners do this every single day. You have incredible expertise. You offer services that legitimately solve your clients' biggest needs. But when I look at your website, your social media, or your PR strategy, I can’t find the "cheesecake” and I’m a professional baker, metaphorically speaking.
Sometimes the really important stuff is buried in thing clients think are important, but in reality, it’s not what your customer is looking for. It’s lost in a sea of generic "full-service" promises. Or worse, it’s completely absent because you assume people already know what you do.
The Chaos of "Hidden" Value
When your core offerings aren’t on the menu, you create chaos for your customers and they might go somewhere else. Google told them you did what they are looking and was kind enough to direct them to your website or social media and now Google search is being made out to look incompetent, which of course no business owner wants.
If a prospect has to work too hard to figure out how you can actually help them or guess what you do, they aren't going to stick around to find out—they are going to the competitor who makes it obvious.
Keep it simple, obvious, and reasonably complete.
At The Small Marketing Agency, we don’t just "do marketing." We help get your best sellers and most important items on the menu.
